“Time for this war to end”: Biden calls on Hamas to accept Israeli ceasefire proposal

U.S. President Joe Biden called on Hamas militants to agree to a “comprehensive” deal proposed by Israel on Friday, amid the regions’ ongoing conflict. A deal, the Democratic leader says would “set the stage for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”

Israel’s three-stage proposal calls for the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and a six-week ceasefire. On top of that, it would include the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel, and the remains of dead hostages being returned to their families for “some degree of closure.”

An earlier proposed deal fell apart in early May after Israel refused to agree to permanently end the war. Instead, they ramped up an assault on Rafah — the southern Gazan city which was, for the most part, being used as a safe haven for Palestinians and a hub for humanitarian aid supplies to enter safely.

More than 36,250 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel began its military assault against the enclave, nearly eight months ago. The offensive came in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel, in which the militant group killed more than 1,200 people and took roughly 250 hostages.

“It's time for this war to end, for the day after to begin,” Biden concluded in his address from the White House.
