Liz Truss took over as Britain's prime minister on Tuesday, replacing Boris Johnson who was forced out after three tumultuous years in power.

''Well, this is it, folks. In only a couple of hours, I will be in Balmoral to see Her Majesty the Queen, and the torch will finally be passed to a new Conservative leader. The baton will be handed over in what has unexpectedly turned out to be a relay race. They changed the rules halfway through, but never mind that now,” Johnson said in his opening remarks in his farewell speech outside 10 Downing Street on Tuesday.

Johnson urged the country and his warring party to unite behind the new leader.

"And I will be supporting Liz Truss and the new government every step of the way. Thank you all very much. Thank you. Goodbye,” the former PM said before he and his wife Carrie left the grounds of 10 Downing Street.
