A doctor has recounted his “terrifying” experience after escaping Nasser Hospital — Gaza’s second-largest health institution — with his family on Thursday, while it was being raided by Israeli armed forces.
“Smoke was filling the place, it was like doomsday, honestly,” Dr. Ahmed Al-Mughraby, head of Nasser’s plastic surgery department, said on Monday while being interviewed in a shelter near another hospital. “People were running everywhere,” he added.
Mughraby said Israeli forces had ordered everyone to evacuate except patients unable to walk and medics looking after them. Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, on the other hand, described the raid on Nasser Hospital as "precise and limited" and said it was based on credible information that Hamas militants were hiding in the facility and was keeping keeping Israeli hostages there — a claim Hamas calls “lies.”
The incident has sounded the alarm bells among international aid agencies, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has called the aftermath of Israel’s raid “indescribable.”
Since the attack, WHO has conducted two evacuations from Nasser Hospital. On Tuesday, representatives said they were concerned about the approximately 150 patients and staff who remain in the faltering institution as the violence rages on.
