Crowds of mourners sang Britain's national anthem outside Buckingham Palace in London on Thursday following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, the nation's figurehead and a towering presence on the world stage for seven decades - as well as the head of state of Canada - died peacefully at her home in Scotland aged 96.
Buckingham Palace said King Charles III and his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, would remain at Balmoral Castle, where the queen died, before returning to London on Friday. On Elizabeth's death, Charles automatically becomes King of the United Kingdom and the head of state of 14 other realms including Australia, Canada and New Zealand. His office confirmed he would be known as Charles III.
Mourners were moved to tears across the country after they received the news of the monarch’s death, gathering to commemorate the historical moment through song and candles.
''An icon really isn't she, and like I said there will never be anybody like her again ever again that will serve for so long,'' said Londoner Jenny Greenfield outside Buckingham Palace where thousands gathered to pay respects.
In Windsor, 67-year-old Christine West fought back tears as she said that the Queen was “ the person we've always looked up to somehow."
