World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary General Celeste Saulo issued a “red alert” on Tuesday over the state of the climate in 2024.
Saulo warned that the previous year set new records for every climate indicator and said climate change constitutes a “defining challenge that humanity faces.”
Highlighting the severity of the crisis, United Nations Secretary General António Guterres opened his comments by warning about a “planet on the brink.”
“Fossil fuel pollution is sending climate chaos of the charts. Sirens are blaring across all major indicators,” he said.
Meanwhile, WMO chief of climate monitoring Omar Baddour said that indicators are pointing to another very warm year in 2024, though it is too early to say whether it will break the record set in 2023. Baddour said this January was the warmest on record.
