With cemeteries overwhelmed and workers running out of places to put bodies, there are concerns that Israel’s promise of a temporary ceasefire with Hamas militants will not be enough for sufficient aid to come in and for people in Gaza to bury the dead before strikes begin again.

“Four days is a Band-Aid on a huge gaping open wound, and it’s not going to allow us to address the scale of the challenges, right now, in Gaza,” said Danny Glenwright, CEO and president of Save the Children Canada.

During the ceasefire, Israel will halt its military offensive in Gaza while Hamas frees “at least” 50 of the roughly 240 hostages it and other militants are holding, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said on Wednesday.

Hundreds of aid trucks are also expected to cross at Rafa during the pause in fighting.

Despite the brief time period, the UN says the pending pause is an “important step” in the ongoing conflict. Global’s Crystal Goomansingh has the details.
