Oymyakon, a village in Siberia, is believed to be the coldest settlement on the planet. Despite the temperature being far below freezing, the village has been troubled by the bizarre natural phenomenon of wildfires that burn beneath the snow and ice.

These so-called ‘zombie fires’ occur due to the high volume of methane gas and flammable minerals trapped within the ice. The blazes are believed to be especially dangerous this year following wildfires over the summer, which destroyed over eight million hectares of woods in the region.

Locals are concerned that, by the time the ice begins to thaw in spring, the fires could quickly spread again with no measures to protect homes and businesses in the area.
