Authorities in the Russian region of Dagestan say a counter-terrorism operation is now over.
Gunmen killed at least 20 people, including police officers and civilians in simultaneous attacks in the cities of Makhachkala and Derbent.
The attackers targeted synagogues, churches and a police post.
