It has been 12 years since the outspoken Sri Lankan journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge was brutally murdered.
He was due to give evidence on a corruption case allegedly involving current President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Now international media watchdogs are taking his and two other cases from Mexico and Syria to a Peoples Tribunal in The Hague.
It will officially begin on Tuesday, to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
The tribunal does not have the power to convict anybody, but it can at least raise awareness and exert pressure on governments to protect journalists.

Al Jazeera’s Minelle Fernandez reports from Colombo, Sri Lanka.
