Iran's military has test-launched a new rocket designed to carry satellites into space.

The rocket, named Zuljanah after the horse of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, reached a height of 500 kilometres, according to Iranian state TV.

Tehran says its satellite program, like its nuclear activities, is aimed at scientific research and other civilian applications. However, the US and other Western countries have long been suspicious of the program because the same technology can be used to develop long-range missiles.

The test comes amid reports that President Joe Biden's administration wants to rejoin the Iran nuclear deal to keep Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, violating its terms by reinstating a sanctions regime against the Islamic Republic. Iran then began breaching the deal’s limits on uranium enrichment activity.

A spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry said the Biden administration must lift the sanctions before Tehran will consider returning to limiting its nuclear activities.
