Zoo Miami has ended its ‘disturbing’ Kiwi Encounter following intense backlash from concerned New Zealanders.
The zoo’s goodwill ambassador Ron Magill shared his deep remorse with Breakfast: "We were wrong. There's no excuse.”
Thousands of signatures have been gathered in a petition demanding better treatment for the mistreated kiwi.
Save the Kiwi executive director Michelle Impey said repatriating the bird was unlikely due to biosecurity concerns.
"Honestly, the best outcome is that that bird remains there and gets really good care.”
