An aide to the leader of Yemen's Houthi movement said on Tuesday that the U.S. "will not escape punishment and retaliation," after sinking three Houthi boats and killing 10 militants in the Red Sea.

Safar Al-Sufi, secretary to Houthi leader Abdel-Malek al-Houthi said at a press conference in Sanaa that America's “reckless actions” on behalf of Israel were affecting international shipping and warned the U.S. would not escape “punishment and retaliation.”

U.S. Navy helicopters repelled an attack by Iran-backed Houthi militants on a Maersk container vessel in the Red Sea, sinking three out of four boats and killing 10 militants on Dec. 31. The naval battle occurred as the attackers sought to board the Singapore-flagged Maersk Hangzhou, Maersk and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

Yemen's Houthis have been targeting vessels in the Red Sea since November to show their support for Hamas, prompting major shipping companies to take the longer and costlier route around Africa's Cape of Good Hope rather than through the Suez Canal.
