Ecstatic Australian fans in Sydney celebrated after watching the Matildas crush Canada 4-0 and advance to the FIFA Women's World Cup round of 16 as Group B winners on Monday.

"I didn’t think we'd win that emphatically....that was everything I could’ve hoped for and more," one fan said.

Hayley Raso scored two, Mary Fowler struck after the break, before a late Steph Catley penalty sent the Olympic champions packing from the tournament.

Canada bowed out at the group stage for the first time since 2011 and with some regret after having needed only a draw to advance.
