A New Jersey woman was sentenced to one year and one day in prison after she was found guilty of perpetrating a scam and collecting more than US$400,000 from GoFundMe donors and using it to buy trips to casinos in Las Vegas and a BMW.

In 2017, she and her then-boyfriend Mark D'Amico raised money for a homeless veteran she says helped her by giving her his last $20 for gas. The couple began raising money for him, but according to a federal criminal complaint, all the money raised on GoFundMe was used up by March 2018.

In addition, state and federal prosecutors said the group had actually met near a Philadelphia casino shortly before the story and fundraiser went viral.
As Sean Previl reports, a lawsuit by the homeless veteran prompted the arrests and now all three are facing various sentences with more potential jail time on the way.
