Voters in Turkey will head to the polls on May 14 in perhaps the most consequential elections in recent history. Once celebrated as the leader who lifted millions of Turks into the middle class, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is facing the most serious challenge of his two decades in power. Opinion polls suggest his main rival for the presidency, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, has a narrow lead in a tight race. Worrying voters more than any other issue is the economy. An inflation-driven cost of living crisis has eroded Erdoğan's support in recent years.

In this Business Special hosted from Istanbul, DW’s Turkey correspondent Julia Hahn visits an earthquake-hit city, speaks with experts and explores the potential impact this election will have on Turkey’s future.
