In Latin America, there has been a failure to address the problem of police brutality. Militarized police forces were accused of human rights offenses after mass protests in 2019 left demonstrators dead, maimed or blinded. Latin American countries have some of the highest rates of killings by police in the world, and the violence has only increased during the coronavirus pandemic.
