Why are sea ice levels shrinking?

The area of sea ice around Antarctica has hit a record low and is expected to shrink even further before this year’s summer melting season ends.

And for the first time the Arctic is also experiencing record low levels of sea ice.

The intense melting affects global sea levels and increases the likelihood of more extreme weather events.
