Current and historical racial inequities in maternal healthcare predispose Black mothers to high-risk pregnancy and complications during and after childbirth, according to Dr. Karen A. Scott, an associate professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at UC San Francisco. Dr. Scott argues that addressing this crisis requires transforming the medical system into one that truly serves the needs and dignity of Black mothers.
