After a chaotic, history-making day, the U.S. House of Representatives was shut down. No bills were heard and no votes were taken because there is no leader to lead.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy lost his job on Tuesday after 11 hardline Republicans turned on him, with Republican Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz leading the charge to oust McCarthy after the House Speaker got Democrat support to prevent a government shutdown. Now, it is unclear who House Republicans will nominate for the speakership

Some members have been broaching potential consensus candidates like Majority Leader Steve Scalise or Whip Tom Emmer, while others have suggested Rep. Jim Jordan, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee and a favorite of the right flank of the party.

Once Republicans decide who to nominate for speaker, the House would have to vote as many times as it takes for a candidate to receive the majority votes, which could quickly become an arduous exercise. Jennifer Johnson has more.
