WHO holds end-of-year news conference on COVID-19, Mpox and other global health concerns

World Health Organization (WHO) officials, led by director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, delivered remarks and held a news conference on COVID-19, as well as other global health issues like Mpox, for their final briefing of the year.

This briefing comes as China began dismantling its stringent “zero-COVID” regime of lockdowns and testing, after protests against curbs that had kept the virus at bay for three years.

"The WHO is very concerned over the evolving situation in China, with increasing reports of severe disease," Ghebreyesus told reporters.

Projections have suggested China could face an explosion of cases and more than a million deaths next year.
