White House denies an Israel-Hamas deal has been reached on fighting pause and release of captives

Almost immediately after the Washington Post broke news about a potential deal between Hamas and Israel, the White House came out and denied it.

This is “not the first time” a “similar “deal” including the release of captives and a pause in fighting has been reported in the media, Al Jazeera’s John Holman, reporting from Washington, DC, said.

While similar negotiations have been happening “over several weeks now”, Holman added, “it seems, for a moment, that we might be getting close”.

“What is certain, is that there’s an increase in the pressure on the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get some sort of deal done.”

The Washington Post report came soon after Biden penned an op-ed for the newspaper, which was quickly rejected by Netanyahu.

The latest reports of a potential US-brokered deal come after diplomatic sources said Qatar-mediated negotiations are under way to free some of the captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and a temporary ceasefire.
