What awaits Afghans in 2022? | DW News

As 2021 comes to a close, we're taking a look back at one of the biggest stories of the year: the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. We look at the situation Afghans find themselves in after 20 years of democracy and look at what the future might hold for them.

After decades at war, the US and its allies called it quits, leaving the Taliban in charge. And if there's a set of images that best capture how Afghans reacted to the Taliban takeover, it is those of desperate people clinging onto a US military plane as it departs Kabul airport. Images from the August 16, the day after the Taliban entered Kabul. The city's airport would go on to see worse scenes, of death and hopelessness as people struggled to leave the country.
