The Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, has said his first goal is to deliver an NHS that "is there when you need it", citing ambulance, hospital waiting times, and faster GP appointments.

His second goal is to improve healthy life expectancy and halve the gap in health outcomes between different areas of England.

To do this, he will focus on three of the biggest killers, pledging to reduce heart disease and strokes by a quarter within a decade, to hit cancer diagnosis targets to increase survival rates and reduce the number of deaths by suicide.
