Three men were left with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries on Monday evening following a shooting exchange in one of the parking lots at West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton Police Service (EPS) confirmed Tuesday in a press briefing.

Authorities locked down the mall as a result of the shooting. Members of the tactical unit cleared the mall to ensure the area was safe before the lockdown was lifted the following morning.

Preliminary investigations led the EPS to believe the shooting was targeted and that the parties were known to each other.

"We want to reassure the citizens of Edmonton that their safety is still sound. And we believe this was a targeted incident. It wasn't random in nature," Deputy Chief Darren Derko said on Tuesday.

"Motivations behind the shooting (are) still not clear," Chief Derko continued, adding that the police investigation is in early development.
