The first Little Blue Penguin to be born on the West Coast hatched Jan. 1, 2024, at the UC San Diego's Birch Aquarium. The chick will be hand raised out of public view for the first few crucial months of its life and its sex will be announced soon.

Wild Little Blue Penguins are facing numerous challenges from climate change and the aquarium hopes the chick's arrival will inspire people to protect the planet.
