German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer rejected criticism the government had failed to warn people of last week's floods, as the death toll from the country's worst natural disaster in almost six decades rose above 160 people in Germany alone.

German Chancellor Candidate Armin Laschet, who joined Seehofer to tour the worst-hit districts, said some of the phenomena could not have been foreseen but said the government "need[s] to be better prepared" and would look at "how can we improve weather warnings."

As soldiers were deployed to help clean up debris and rubble, huge piles of flood-damaged belongings continued to grow on the outskirts of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Rheinbach, one of the towns hit by Germany's catastrophic flooding.
