Actor Matthew McConaughey on Tuesday criticized lawmakers' inaction on gun reform in the U.S. just two weeks after the mass shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas — his hometown.

"Can both sides rise above, can both sides see beyond the political problem at hand and admit that we have a life preservation problem on our hands," he said passionately. "We have a chance right now to reach for an to grasp a higher ground above our political affiliations."

McConaughey made the comments during a White House press briefing, ahead of the regular news conference with press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

He said it was not a partisan issue, and called on lawmakers to make "the right choices on the issue that is in front of us today." He said the country needs responsible gun ownership and background checks, the raising of the minimum age to purchase certain guns to 21, red flag laws and consequences to those who abuse them. But McConaughey also stressed politicians can pass these laws without "infringing" on Second Amendment rights.

Following McConaughey's appearance, Jean-Pierre also spoke on President Joe Biden's involvement on gun reform and said he was "optimistic" about negotiations taking place between lawmakers on both sides on action regarding gun reform.
