“We are really scared,” Aleppo resident Mohamed Amoury said, following a huge earthquake that struck Turkey and northwest Syria on Monday, flattening apartment blocks and heaping more destruction on Syrian cities already devastated by years of war.

Aleppo residents and rescue workers were seen clearing the rubble of damaged buildings and trying to break through cement to rescue those still trapped.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,200 people and injured thousands more in Turkey and northwest Syria. Hitting before sunrise in bitter winter weather, the quake was the worst to strike Turkey this century. It was followed in the early afternoon by another large quake of magnitude 7.7.

It was not immediately clear how much damage had been done by the second quake. Like the first, it was felt across the region and endangered rescuers struggling to pull casualties from the rubble.
