WATCH: Why an ‘election week’ does not mean the process is flawed

Given the high number of mail-in ballots expected this election year due to the coronavirus, many polling experts have said that Americans may not know the final result of the presidential election for several days. But Stanford Law Professor Nathaniel Persily, who co-founded the Healthy Elections Project in partnership with MIT, said this does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with the system, or the election results. Each election year, after all, there are millions of ballots that are not verified and counted until after election day. “The fact that we might be in for election week instead of election night doesn’t mean that anything is wrong with the process. It’s better to get it right than to get it done quick,” Persily said. He spoke with PBS NewsHour political reporter Daniel Bush on Oct. 22 ahead of the second and final presidential debate.
