A Ukrainian loss to Russia would change how the world, and specifically Europe, views the United States, The Atlantic's Anne Applebaum tells Washington Week moderator Jeffrey Goldberg.

"Defeat means the elimination of the U.S. as the security guarantor for Europe," Applebaum said. "It means that the U.S. is no longer seen as a reliable ally by anybody."

Russia's invasion has passed its second year, as the Ukrainians are running low on soldiers, ammunition and weaponry. Ukraine is waiting for more aid from the U.S., but it's been stalled in Congress.

The Senate passed an aid package that included $60 billion for Ukraine on a 70-29 vote earlier this month, but House Speaker Mike Johnson has refused to bring it to a vote.

Senior U.S. officials worry Ukraine will lose without the aid.

President Joe Biden plans to meet with lawmaker leadership on Tuesday, as well as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to discuss the aid package.
