Special Counsel Robert Hur, who had been appointed to investigate President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents after he left office as vice president, answered a number of rapid-fire questions on Tuesday that highlighted the differences between Biden’s conduct and that of former President Donald Trump, who is facing trial over documents recovered at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
Hur was testifying before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday about his February report that found “several material distinctions” between Biden and Trump’s cases. These included Trump’s refusal to return classified documents and allegations of obstruction. Democrats pounced on these distinctions during Tuesday’s hearing.
Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., asked Hur whether Biden had asked his lawyers to lie to the FBI, destroy documents or otherwise obstruct the investigation into his handling of documents – all things Trump is alleged to have done.
Hur confirmed Biden had not.
The start date for Trump’s federal trial examining his handling of classified documents is awaiting a judge’s decision. Trump’s lawyers have argued it should be postponed until after the presidential election.
