Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., gave opening remarks March 21 as the Senate Judiciary Committee kicked off its Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
“Judicial power is important. So is judicial restraint. I believe that the appropriate role of the federal judiciary is the following: Federal judges don’t make law. They don't tell us what the law ought to be. They tell us what the law is,” Kennedy said.
Jackson was nominated by President Joe Biden in February to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. If confirmed, she will be the first Black woman on the high court.
