Interior Secretary Deb Haaland says she has written her own many times about the way she sees the natural environment. Once a student of U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, Haaland said she values how poetry can convey “thought and ideas about nature, about our past, about our future… in a way that is deep and meaningful.”

Haaland, who makes history as the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary, joined PBS NewsHour anchor and managing editor Judy Woodruff to discuss the tragic history of Native boarding schools and it how it has affected her own family.
