Richard Armitage, who served as Deputy Secretary of State during the George H.W. Bush administration, while Colin Powell was Secretary of State, spoke at Powell's funeral, recounting nostalgic memories he and Powell shared together in their time working at the State Department. "As a husband, as a father, as a friend, I don't think we share often enough how we really feel with our families, sometimes we take it for granted. But I want you to know he didn't take it for granted," he told Powell's family, who was in attendance of the funeral service.

Powell died last month at the age of 84. He served Democratic and Republican presidents in times of both war and peace, and earned a reputation as a trustworthy and fair leader. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Powell rose to the rank of four-star general and became the first Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1989. In that role he oversaw the U.S. invasion of Panama and later the U.S. invasion of Kuwait to oust the Iraqi army in 1991.
