Lynn Sweet, Washington bureau chief for the Chicago Sun-Times, was at the Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, outside of Chicago, during a mass shooting on Monday that left at least seven dead and two dozen injured.

Sweet told PBS NewsHour’s Amna Nawaz that as parade goers ran from the shooting, she walked toward the scene, noting how it looked like a moment frozen in time.

"Their chairs...water bottles, backpacks, bits of food, hats just left there, especially all the baby carriages just left there as people fled," she said.

Authorities have arrested a 21-year-old white male, who they said used a “high-powered rifle” and dressed in women's clothing to blend into the fleeing crowd.
