Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., gave opening remarks on Oct. 13 as the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack presented its findings to the public.

The chairman said that new materials would be shown in this hearing, including from the U.S. Secret Service and footage of congressional leaders. The hearing will also “take a step back and look at the evidence in a broader context.”

“This investigation is not about politics, is not about party. It's about the facts, plain and simple,” Thompson said. “And it's about making sure our government functions under the rule of law as our constitution demands.”

Thompson added that “the most striking fact is that all this evidence comes almost entirely from Republicans.”

The committee returned to its public-facing work after nearly three months, having rescheduled the current hearing two weeks ago in light of Hurricane Ian.
