A passenger plane collided with a Japanese coast guard aircraft on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport Tuesday evening, killing at least five people.

All 379 people who were aboard Japan Airlines flight 516 survived the collision, escaping down exit slides as the plane became engulfed in flames near the end of the runway. But five of the six coast guard crew members on the Bombardier Dash-8 had perished, Japan's transport minister said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, and a Japan Airlines official said they are looking into communications between airport control and the aircraft, an Airbus A350 that was arriving from the northern Japanese city of Sapporo.

The coast guard patrol plane was en route to deliver relief supplies to Niigata, Japan, where a deadly New Year’s Day earthquake caused widespread damage and killed at least 48 people.
