WATCH: How Madeleine Albright used pins, fashion in her diplomacy

Interested in jewelry from a young age growing up in Czechoslovakia, fashion was a key element of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s diplomatic ‘tool box.’ As U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and then as the first woman to be the U.S. Secretary of State, her iconic – and strategic – use of brooches and pins became highly tracked global political statements.

Secretary Albright would later go on to write a book about these pins, and a virtual exhibit of more than 200 of Albright’s pins are currently on display on the National Museum of American Diplomacy website. The NewsHour sat down with curator Nancy Zinn to take a look at these pins, and explore how Secretary Albright used fashion in international diplomacy.
