Waves as tall as 30 feet battered the California coastline on Thursday causing flooding in many seaside communities. Driven by a powerful offshore storm in the Pacific Ocean, the inundation has triggered flood advisories and high surf warnings from San Diego to the San Francisco Bay Area and up into Oregon.

In Oxnard, California, downpour conditions brought a month's worth of rain in less than an hour, while some residents in Santa Cruz County were forced to evacuate due to flooding. Eight onlookers were also hospitalized when a wave broke over a seawall in Ventura.

Yet despite warnings along California's coast, surfers took advantage of the high surf. Forecasters said those conditions along with continued rain and flooding could extend through the weekend and into the new year.
