President Donald Trump could not provide specifics on how the U.S. will reunite migrant children with their families amid reports that the government cannot locate the parents of more than 500 children who were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border under a controversial Trump immigration policy that started in 2017.

"We're working on it ... we're trying very hard" to reunite the families, Trump claimed during the final presidential debate held on Oct. 22. Trump added that children held in immigration detention facilities "are so well taken care of," but multiple reports indicate children have been subject to abuse, dirty conditions and inadequate medical services while in U.S. custody. Vice President Joe Biden said the family separation policy "makes us a laughing stock and violates every notion of who we are as a nation."

The debate took place in Nashville, Tennessee, with less than two weeks to go until Election Day.
