In a wide-ranging interview with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Judy Woodruff asked him if Russian President Vladimir Putin should be held personally responsible for possible war crimes in Ukraine. Erdoğan warned against taking sides in the conflict and said that Putin was only “prioritizing” Russian interests.

“He is prioritizing the interests of his country and he's fighting for his interests, for his country's interests.”

Erdoğan said that if the war in Ukraine is to end it will require an even-handed approach that is satisfactory to both Russia and Ukraine.

“If we are going to reach a conclusion, we are not going to reach that conclusion by taking sides,” he said. “We’re not going to defend a single leader, but instead we have to be looking for a conclusion that will satisfy all parties involved.”
