The 2024 Summer Olympics is set to begin this week. But the international sporting event won't kick off with the traditional opening ceremony, a parade of athletes entering a central arena, but rather, there will now be a parade of boats down the River Seine.

But while the Olympics will start with a celebration, the Summer Olympics are not removed from feeling the impact of geo-political crises and societal questions over gender identity in sport.
