Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Wednesday declared a 6 p.m. curfew for the city as pro-Donald Trump rioters continue to storm the Capitol buildings. The mayor urged people to stay home and said these acts are not only "unpatriotic," but unlawful.
"The behaviour we are witnessing is shameful, unpatriotic and above all, it is unlawful," said Bowser. "There will be law and order, and this behaviour will not be tolerated."
The metropolitan police department has been deployed, she said, to assist the U.S. Capitol police.
Chaos descended onto the House Chamber floor as protesters supporting outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building seeking to prevent president-elect Joe Biden’s election certification on Wednesday.
U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence was pulled from the House Chamber floor, and police dispersed tear gas to push back protesters, telling members of Congress inside the House chamber to put on gas masks. Several senators tweeted they were sheltering in their offices while security evacuated much of the building.
