One firefighter was killed and 10 more were injured after an explosion flattened a home in Sterling, Virginia on Friday night.

Loudoun Fire Chief Keith Johnson said Saturday that firefighters had been called to the home for reports of a smell of gas outside the home. He said they arrived to find an underground propane tank leaking.

A short time later, an explosion occurred as multiple firefighters were inside the home, he said.

Travor Brown, 45, a firefighter with the Sterling Volunteer Fire Department was killed in the explosion, Chief Johnson announced.

Four firefighters remain in hospital with various injuries but are expected to survive.
