Venice will soon start charging day-trippers to visit the popular tourist location during peak periods, as it tries to find ways to deal with over tourism, which strains the city’s infrastructure from visitors clogging up the city’s narrow streets and canals.

The city will begin collecting the fee, initially 5 euros ($7.30 Canadian) per day-tripper, as a 30-day pilot test during weekends in the spring and summer and during Italian national holidays.

In a statement, it said it hopes to “disincentivize” daily tourism during certain periods and improve quality of life for Venice’s dwindling number of full-time residents.

Rachel Dodds, tourism expert from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), says such fees are something that could be adopted in other cities across Europe struggling with similar concerns.
