Thousands of Venezuelans escaping poverty and violence at home are risking their lives by crossing one of the driest places on earth, the Atacama Desert, to reach Chile.
It is a journey of several thousand kilometres from Venezuela to Colombia, then Ecuador, down to Peru and then from Bolivia into Chile, the final destination.
The route is attracting criminals who prey on these people, who are not legally allowed to be in Chile and yet keep coming, driven to find a livelihood to support their families.

Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from Colchane, Chile.
