Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse Sparks Concerns Over Char Dham Project

Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse Latest Update: Concerted efforts are being made to rescue the 40 workers trapped inside a tunnel in Uttarakhand since Sunday. In the latest effort, nearly three-foot diameter pipes will be pushed through the heap of debris by drilling a hole using auger drilling machines in the tunnel. Initial reports suggest that a landslide in the region triggered the collapse, however, officials say that investigation is on to ascertain the exact reason. The 4.5-km tunnel on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri National Highway, which will join Silkyara and Dandalgaon in Uttarkashi, is part of the Char Dham Project. Once finished, it is expected to cut down the distance by 26 km. But this latest accident has once again sparked concerns about the Char Dham Highway Project, which seeks to widen roads and build tunnels and bridges in the ecologically fragile area. Environmentalists have pointed out in the past that this is one of the most disaster-prone areas, and these large-scale projects only increase the vulnerability of the area. In 2020, the Supreme Court allowed road widening by 10 metres after the central government brought the national security argument, citing the need to have roads leading to the border with China. Environmentalists had cried foul, claiming the national interest argument was brought in later, for a project devised to ease travel for tourists to the holy Char Dhams in Uttarakhand.
