Vietnam and the United States have upgraded their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. US President Joe Biden traveled to Vietnam for the occasion as he sought to move beyond the 'bitter past' of the Vietnam War. The focus of the visit is to expand avenues of cooperation in trade and technology, and also to boost Vietnam's capacity to fight regional and transnational crime. But there’s also the looming threat from China in the region that formed the backdrop of the visit. Vietnam has territorial disputes with China and the US is a big power rival to Beijing. President Biden clarified where the US stood on that.
