After a violent mob attacked the US Capitol on January 6th, the Biden administration made what it called "domestic terrorism" a top priority.
The US attorney general Merrick Garland says it is the biggest threat facing the United States and is seeking $100m to fund a plan to combat it.
The FBI plans to increase intelligence sharing, work with tech companies to eliminate content that could incite violence and work across government to identify and root out potential attackers or supporters, even in the military and law enforcement.
The Trump White House was reluctant to even acknowledge domestic terrorism and often equated the threat from the far right to that of Black Lives Matter protests or Antifa, the anti-fascist movement.
Intelligence reports still say white supremacy was a key driver of domestic terrorism in the US.

Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reports from the US capital, Washington, DC.
