The US defence secretary says American forces together with their Australian allies will defend themselves from what he described as China's "bullying behaviour".
Lloyd Austin is in Brisbane with the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, for talks to discuss security in the Indo-Pacific.
Two countries said they were united in ensuring "stability" and "peace" across the region.
